Entrepreneurs CFONinety days, on one line

The next ninety days of cash should fit on one line you can check against the bank, not a model you need a guide to open.

Why ninety, not a year

Read Why ninety, not a year

A year-long picture goes stale before you finish arguing with it. Ninety days is long enough to see a hire, a tax payment, a slow month, or a piece of equipment, and short enough that the deposits in it are mostly real. We build that line from the closed month plus the bills and invoices you already know about.

The line has dates. What must leave, what you expect to arrive, and the week the balance would get thin if nothing changes. Thin is a week, not a mood. Once it has a date, you can move a purchase, ask a customer, or delay a hire with your eyes open.

We do not fill the line with hope. A proposal that has not been accepted stays off, or it sits in a separate note labeled as a proposal. The line itself is mean on purpose. You can add optimism after you have seen the mean version. Most founders have been managing the optimistic one from memory.

What usually surprises the line

Payroll is the surprise that is not a surprise. It leaves on a rhythm, and it is larger than the rent. We put every scheduled run on the line for the next ninety days, using the provider you already run. We do not move payday. We only refuse to let the line forget it.

Tax payments are the other quiet exit. Estimates, sales tax, payroll tax. They have dates, and those dates belong on the same line as rent. A founder who sees them only when the notice arrives is reading a line that was incomplete. We would rather the date be boring in week one.

Owner draws are the third. Money you take without a date makes the line a fiction. We ask you to name the draws you already plan, and we put them on the weeks you plan to take them. If the line cannot hold them, that is the conversation, held now, not after the transfer.

How we use the line together

On the call we scroll the ninety days once. You say which week worries you. We say which bill or which missing deposit creates that week. Then we stop. A ninety-day line is not a strategy retreat. It is a list with dates, and the decision is which date you want to change.

If the months behind the line are open, we will not pretend the line is sturdy. We mark it as a sketch and we go close the month. A sturdy line is a privilege of a closed file. You should be able to feel the difference, because the sketch will not let you make a hire on it.

Update it when the month closes, not when panic arrives. Panic writes a new spreadsheet. A monthly update keeps one line alive. You should recognize it in November because you already saw it in October, with one week different and the rest familiar.

Which week feels thin

A month name is enough if you do not know the day.
